Japan, 19th century Important Ryôshibako in hira and takamaki-e, kirigane and togidashi, representing a boat on the peaceful waves of a river winding between pavilions, the banks raised by pine and cherry trees in bloom, enhanced with gold leaves. Each side is illustrated with three cranes in flight, flying over various wooded landscapes. The interior is lacquered in nashi-ji. The reverse side of the lid is decorated with a ribboned ball with flowers, under the gaze of a bird. Signed Hôgyokusai.
