BOUTET DE MONVEL Bernard, documents and memories of the Great War (1914-1918)
[More than 150 documents]

At his own request, Bernard Boutet de Monvel was placed in the air force in November 1915, and for 3 years flew over enemy lines in France and Macedonia. He made his first attempt to link Salonika and Bucharest, crossing the whole of Bulgaria in the face of German squadrons. He is mentioned almost 5 times in the Army Order and receives the Legion of Honor from Prince Alexander of Serbia and King Carol II of Romania.

A series of documents consigned by Bernard's mother have come down to us. Arranged in two drawing boxes, entitled respectively "Souvenirs de guerre de Bernard Boutet de Monvel" and "Photographie et documents de guerre de Bernard", this set consists of annotated newspaper clippings and handwritten documents. In particular, there are photographs bearing inscriptions, such as one showing the members of a meeting around Marshal Lyautey, and anecdotal items such as a letter with dried flowers bearing the following inscription: "fleurs cueillies à Salonique le 24 Avril 1916 par mon cher Bernard, reçues le 9 mai à Nemours" ("flowers picked in Salonika on April 24, 1916 by my dear Bernard, received in Nemours on May 9").

Also present are documents showing Bernard's role in the army, such as aerial photographs - most of them dated and signed, and, finally, military maps printed and drawn in Bernard Boutet de Monvel's hand.
