BERNARD BOUTET DE MONVEL, Set of preparatory photographs for the portrait of Millicent Rogers, circa 1949, various sizes 35.5 x 28 cm / 25.5 x 20.5 cm.
[10 documents - developed photographs]

Millicent Rogers is a woman of the world, heiress and jewelry designer. Her father was considered the richest man in the world in 1910. She posed regularly for magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. In the late 1940s, Rogers began making jewelry, which she wears in this series of photographs. She was also very close to Anglo-American couturier Charles James, whose creation she also wears in these photos. The designer and her client were so close that in 1947 she organized an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum entitled "A Decade of Design for Mrs Millicent H. Rogers by Charles James".

These photographs were taken in preparation for the portrait she commissioned from Bernard Boutet de Monvel. Boutet de Monvel faithfully portrayed her in these shots, which also feature a "mise au carreau". Some of the photographs are even cut out by the artist himself, revealing his working methods. The photographs also show Bernard Boutet de Monvel's studio in the United States and the staging of his customers.

This 1949 portrait of Millicent Roger was Bernard Boutet de Monvel's last painting, before he died suddenly in a plane crash in the Azores.
