Set of preparatory photographs for Bernard Boutet de Monvel's Self-Portrait Place Vendôme, circa 1932, various sizes 33 x 27 cm / 9 x 15 cm.
[8 documents - developed photographs]

Self-portraiture was a recurring theme for Bernard Boutet de Monvel, who decided to create two portraits of himself for an exhibition at the Reinhardt Galleries in New York. One shows him as a sophisticated dandy posing from the Ritz Paris in front of Place Vendôme, the other as an artist in his studio with a palette in hand. These two paintings were sold at Sotheby's in 2016 (Collection Boutet de Monvel, lot 25 and 36).

This set of photographs shows Bernard Boutet de Monvel posing in three-quarter view in his Paris studio, hat, gloves and cane in hand. Behind him can be seen another painting of his house in Nemours. The artist added grisaille directly by hand, indicating the design of the window in front of which he depicts himself in the final painting. The entire work has been tiled by the artist.

Another photograph shows the Place Vendôme from the Ritz Paris. It shows parked cars and the Vendôme column. This view was cropped by the artist and can be seen in the background of Self-Portrait Place Vendôme - reproduced in ADDADE, "Bernard Boutet de Monvel", Éditions de l'amateur, 2001, p. 249.

Bernard Boutet de Monvel was a regular at the Ritz Paris and its Café Parisien, for which he produced numerous illustrations for the press. The white flower in the painter's buttonhole evokes the elegance of the Parisian elite who frequented the hotel, as in the portrait of Marcel Proust by Jacques-Émile Blanche (1892, Musée d'Orsay).

To accompany the photographs, the lot includes two invoices from "Peter A. Julet & Son, photographers of Fine Arts", one of which is dated May 6, 1937 and bears the words "Self-portrait".

Attached are 4 photographs of Self-portrait à la palette by Bernard Boutet de Monvel (Lot 36 of the Sotheby's sale, Boutet de Monvel Collection, 2016).
